Kanab Bluff

Painting in "Maynard Dixon Country" (Zion National Park) is a challenge and a wonderful experience. The challenge is to put up with the heat, wind and dry air, to capture the light. The contrast of values is extreme and yet the shapes are clear and simple. The cloud shapes are big and simple, and yet there is large variety of color within each cloud shape. The same is true for a sunlit bluff face or one that is in shadow. The only way to really capture the essence of this country is to be patient and observe. The color and values are not what your preconceptions have led you to believe. The rich color in the shadows is the elusive prey to capture.

Batiquitos Sun

Two weeks ago I painted with a great group of people at Batiquitos Lagoon. It was a perfect day to paint, especially for January. I was able to paint 3 sketches for the day. For me, I love to paint there, because in my previous life as an architect, I helped lead the team that planned Aviara, which is where this area lies. So here I am 20 years later, painting a spot that we protected and designed in our vision for the area next to the lagoon.

Black Mountain Shadows

I have gotten inspired by San Diego's backcountry. The great visual shapes are so clearly defined. I is similar to my experience this year at Maynard Dixon Country in Zion. The shapes there are so big and simple. I felt like I made some compositional progress there and I can see it how I attack local scenes.

The Road to Warner Springs

I went up to Julian a couple of weekends ago with Jeff Yeomans, one of San Diego's more famous local artists. We painted for the afternoon, then went to the opening of the California Art Club "BackCountry San Diego" Show. We both had paintings in the show and had a really great time..
As the sun was setting we drove from Santa Ysabel down the road to Warner Springs Ranch. San Diego's mountains are beautiful this time of year. The contrast between the golden color fields and the afternoon light on the sage covered mountains is inspiring. I want to paint more.

We were back up to our mountaintop perch with special permission from the owner and the thunderheads were starting to build. I have never really painted clouds like this. I've got a ways to go to understand how to paint them.

We had a great day of painting in Johnson Canyon, and we are very tired. On the other hand, there was this perfect river course running in and out of the shadows. We couldn't resist. This is about a 30 minute color study for use in the studio at a later time.

11x14 sketch

I was doing a workshop with Ray Roberts on a plateau above Kanab. The afternoon was hazy, but it was still very hot (95 degrees). I combined the ground plain to the west with clouds to the south.

8x10 sketch
I painted for 8 days at the Zion area better known as Maynard Dixon Country. It is a yearly event with around 37 of the best landscape artists in the country. I go up to paint with them and maybe one day will be invited. This a cool place out of the hot sun. The light was changing quickly with clouds rolling overhead. The idea was to emphasize the light in the background by painting the foreground in dark, warm values.

New Life

I participated in the North Park Plein Air Competition sponsored by the SD Art Institute and the California Art Club. To my surprise I was awarded First Place.
This is a painting of the the best Chinese Laundry in San Diego, the New Life Laundry. All paintings were painted on site and no touching up in the studio.
North Park is a very interesting mix of people.
As I was painting lots of people made comments, but they varied. The people going to yoga commented that I captured the spirit of the place. The tatoo artists said "dude". The laundry people just told me about how good the laundry was.
