Amber

I painted this portrait of a model whose name happens to be Melissa, but because of the sculptural amber hair, I called this painting Amber. She has a very mysterious look to her, especially in this pose. I focused on capturing her gesture in a three hour time span. The paint strokes are especially rough and I varied between thick and thin layers of paint to give a sense of a glimpse of a moment.  This painting has appeared in the San Diego Art Institute International Art Show in 2009. It is currently in the California Art Club Show at the Blinn House for the months of December thru June 2010.

Afternoon Splash (after Situ)

I did this painting in a great class at Watts Atelier called Painting from the Masters.
Mian Situ was my "master". We painted from books that were purchased from Mian's wife, who is a very wonderful and interesting woman. As you can imagine, if you are painting from a book, the color is probably nothing like the real thing. I found that the composition was intriguing, and the boys portrayed beautifully.
I must say that I learned a great deal from recreating a version of this great painting.

A Hot Day

This is a painting of Van who is one of the longest performing models at Watts Atelier. He is quite an interesting guy. This happens to be a very quiet painting of him, but if you want an "action figure" model, he is your man. I loved this pose, because it involves two accessories -- a hat and glasses.

My model for this painting is the daughter of Ray and Peggi Roberts. I walked by and Peggi was photographing her for a painting that she was doing. Mary was sitting on a concrete slab. We were up in the mountains, but with the help of a hose, she was soon sitting on a wet sandy beach. The painting was accepted in the Scottsdale Best and Brightest Show for the spring of 2010. I am headed over there next week for the opening.

Kanab Bluff

Painting in "Maynard Dixon Country" (Zion National Park) is a challenge and a wonderful experience. The challenge is to put up with the heat, wind and dry air, to capture the light. The contrast of values is extreme and yet the shapes are clear and simple. The cloud shapes are big and simple, and yet there is large variety of color within each cloud shape. The same is true for a sunlit bluff face or one that is in shadow. The only way to really capture the essence of this country is to be patient and observe. The color and values are not what your preconceptions have led you to believe. The rich color in the shadows is the elusive prey to capture.

Batiquitos Sun

Two weeks ago I painted with a great group of people at Batiquitos Lagoon. It was a perfect day to paint, especially for January. I was able to paint 3 sketches for the day. For me, I love to paint there, because in my previous life as an architect, I helped lead the team that planned Aviara, which is where this area lies. So here I am 20 years later, painting a spot that we protected and designed in our vision for the area next to the lagoon.

Black Mountain Shadows

I have gotten inspired by San Diego's backcountry. The great visual shapes are so clearly defined. I is similar to my experience this year at Maynard Dixon Country in Zion. The shapes there are so big and simple. I felt like I made some compositional progress there and I can see it how I attack local scenes.

The Road to Warner Springs

I went up to Julian a couple of weekends ago with Jeff Yeomans, one of San Diego's more famous local artists. We painted for the afternoon, then went to the opening of the California Art Club "BackCountry San Diego" Show. We both had paintings in the show and had a really great time..
As the sun was setting we drove from Santa Ysabel down the road to Warner Springs Ranch. San Diego's mountains are beautiful this time of year. The contrast between the golden color fields and the afternoon light on the sage covered mountains is inspiring. I want to paint more.

Clouds

We were back up to our mountaintop perch with special permission from the owner and the thunderheads were starting to build. I have never really painted clouds like this. I've got a ways to go to understand how to paint them.
